What is Delta?

Technically speaking, delta is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. In the realm of physics, it represents change. The first few times the Delta leadership team gathered, it was probably the only name that seemed to fit. It came so natural, it's short, easy to remember, but most important, it’s very meaningful.

The dream was to have a club that would hold its sessions in English. Making it the first of its kind: an open space in which English speakers, expert or novice, can practice their leadership and, most importantly: their communication skills. Not an English class, because there is no grade, but an open study group, where session after session we learn different skills, from simple things such as new words or expressions or to perhaps more complex things like insight on a particular topic. A very special characteristic of Delta is that our members come from different backgrounds, making our sharing and learning experiences quite enriching.

Yet, part of making this come true is still in the works. The goal for this summer is to register Delta at Toastmasters International Headquarters. How does this work? Toastmasters begins with the member, and then rolls up into a hierarchy from club, to area, to division, to district, to region and finally to TI. Delta would belong to Area 1 within Division A, within District 34 and Region 10.

This brings me to mention another very interesting part of the Toastmaster’s experience: contests. Twice a year each club prepares and sends their best to compete within their area/division/district and select the top speaker and evaluator.

Hopefully, Delta will be ready to participate this year. The main reason is that Monterrey will be hosting the National Convention, in which one of the main events is the contest finals.

Delta means change, but I like to see this change as challenge. A challenge to how we do things now and how we can do them better, a challenge to do things outside of the box, come out of our shell and face even our biggest nightmare . . . of speaking in public.

I invite you to embrace this change, and to be part of the consolidation of this dream named Delta.
